Proverbs 31

Proverbs 31

The Proverbs 31 woman. We have all read about her. Somehow she can make us feel so guilty! How could we ever live up to her example!
Let’s take a look at a few of her attributes…
She is described as virtuous.
The term “virtuous” is from a noun meaning strength, efficiency, ability.  Here it refers to strength of character
She is like a rare gem.
Precious stones are precious and costly because they are so rare.
She is trustworthy.
Her husband can count on her to do him good and to be a blessing to him. He can count on her to do this today, tomorrow, and all the days of her life.
She is strong.
This woman has many gifts and does many things, She is willing to work hard at what God is calling her to do. She fills her time with productive, helpful activities. She is concerned with serving her family and others.
She helps those who are in need.
She reaches out to those in need and helps the poor.
She speaks wisdom and kindness into others lives.
She treats others well.
Her children call her blessed and her husband praises her.
Don’t we all want to be able to do all of these things? The problem is that if we view the Proverbs 31 Woman as a list of things to accomplish, we might miss the true motivation that drives her…the fear of the Lord!
Proverbs 31:30 says…
“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised”
This woman fears the Lord and that is the reason she should be praised! What is the fear of the Lord? The beginning of wisdom!
When we look at this chapter with this in mind, we see the wisdom is wanting to obey what God tells her to do. She chooses to honor the Lord with her whole life. Her desire is to live with true wisdom and that is the example we should be trying to follow. That is her motivation and the reason she is able to accomplish everything she does! This is not an impossible standard, it is a godly standard!
Let these verses inspire you to desire the fear of the Lord! My prayer is that we are all strengthened by her devotion to the Lord and that we become women that want to have lives that are full of faith and a blessing to others!
